Jumping on the Bandwagon: That '90s Lip

There are some bandwagons that I cringe to jump on- one example being anything associated with a Kardashian-Jenner-trending teenager-reality star type of persona. Call me a cranky old lady ('cus I pretty much am), but that's just not the vibe I want to channel.

But one undeniable trend that I'm happy to get behind is that of a '90s-inspired lip. As someone who actually lived through and wore makeup in the '90s (my first-ever lipstick was bought at the Body Shop in 1995, yep, old lady), the fact that a bold, matte, tawny lip is making a comeback truly pulls at my nostalgic heartstrings. So on the bandwagon I leap!

Despite being drawn to this trend, I stumbled across my perfect '90s lip shades accidentally. The Inglot Toronto store was having a Black Friday sale and I sauntered in thinking that I might snag anything except for a lipstick. I mean, we've seen my stash. However, as usually happens, I did gravitate towards the lip products and the swatching began. I was particularly drawn to the matte products, especially those with a muted rosy-mauvey-tawney hue.

After trying on a few different shades, I discovered a combination that was meant to be! I opted for Inglot Lipstick #425 (a warm, matte saturated rose) and AMC Lip Crayon #22 (a wine-stained rosy red):

Here are swatches of both shades on my inner arm (MAC NC15 skin tone):

(L-R): Inglot Lipstick #425 and AMC Lip Crayon #22

My favourite way to pair these products is to first apply Lipstick #425, which is the lighter of the two, all over the lip as a base. I then go in and line the lips with Lip Pencil #22 (slightly darker), which creates lovely dimension and fullness without that obvious "darker lip liner" sort of look. I then may go in with a second swipe of #425 in the centre of the lower lip for some extra contrast.

Here's a closeup of what this combination looks like on:

And in the context of a completed makeup look:

I have to say that I'm totally obsessed with this lip look. Not only do I find the shades quite wearable and flattering with my complexion, I totally feel that I'm channeling my favourite mid-'90s beauty gurus each time I swipe these on. I mean, who didn't want to look like Janeane Garofalo in Reality Bites? Just me?... ok ;) At the very least, you can't argue with emulating a daisy-adorned Drew Barrymore. Such a classic and playful look!

So if my love for these lip colours means that I'm jumping on a trendy bandwagon, call me a lemming! '90 beauty will also have a special place in my heart (it's truly the time when I began experimenting with makeup), so if I can honour that by rocking a matte rosy-red lip, you can totally count me in!

Have you been drawn in by the '90s lipstick trend? Anyone else out there old enough to remember this look the first time around?

Have an amazing weekend! xo

  3. Hey Jen,
I love 90s too and hate that reality star makeup hype. It doesn't make us a cranky old lady though, lol. This shade looks beautiful on you and I am digging the matte lipsticks, love them so much! Wish I could try Inglot too.

  6. Hey Jen, great combination! This is definitely the good part of the 90's. I abhor the brownish shades that are associated with the 90's, but this I can do!

    1. Yeah, I can't wear shades that are too brown, but I'm all over the muted roses and reds :)
