Hi, everyone! I'm such a sucker for Halloween. While our celebrations are pretty low-key, I always like to ensure that my festive makeup is full-force. This year, I was inspired to create a look that channeled ancient Egypt. I went as Cleopatra for Halloween several years ago, but this time around I wanted to embody something a bit more mystical, mythological, and archaic.
I had tons of fun gathering visual inspiration for the look. I collected several images with sources ranging from tutorials, fashion runways, movie characters, and ancient artwork. Each portrayed a bold look that had a feel of golden Egyptian goddess- beautiful, powerful, and perhaps a bit sinister.
The beginnings of my version was all about golden, metallic skin. I mixed one of my new favourite foundations, Make Up For Ever Ultra HD, and mixed it with a golden illuminator, Revlon Photoready Skinlights in Bare Light, and a shimmering golden green powder eye shadow, MAC Pigment in Old Gold. Once the glowing base was completed, I gilded my face further with some powder products. I applied Inglot's Shine #08 Eye Shadow, a shiny pale yellow gold, all over my face, concentrating it on the high points of the face like a highlighter. I then applied more of Old Gold along the edges of my face, along my jaw line, and underneath my cheekbones to add some definition and shape to my face. Since I was going for more of a statue-like (rather than pure glamorous) look, I also painted my lips with Old Gold Pigment to keep the colour consistent.
Now onto the eyes! I first defined my brows using a black eye shadow, Urban Decay Creep from the Naked Palette. To create more of a graphic look, I ran Make Up For Ever's Aqua Eyes Waterproof Eyeliner in 0L along the bottom arches of my brows. For the eye colour, I applied Charlotte Tilbury Eyes To Mesmerize cream shadow in Cleopatra (seemed appropriate!), a glimmering bold teal, all over my lids. To further intensify the shade, I topped Cleopatra with a mix of the cobalt blue and seafoam shadows from the Marc Jacobs The Siren Eye-Con shadow palette. Next, I applied Old Gold in the crease of my eye, then blended it up to the brow bone for an extra touch of patina. Underneath the eyes, I first ran MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner in Undercurrent, a gorgeous gilded teal, along the lash line, winging it up towards the edge of the brow. I then took Make Up For Ever's Aqua Eyes Waterproof Liner 0L below Undercurrent, creating a near horizontal line outwards and inwards down the bridge of my nose slightly. I finished with some little dots of YSL liquid liner in Deep Green on the outer edges of the eyes and a few coats of black mascara.
In terms of how I accessorized the makeup (yes, the makeup is generally my main focus and the rest of the costume is usually a bit of an afterthought; whoops), I first liked how it looked with my wet hair slicked back and paired with a gold Egyptian-inspired necklace.
I then pulled my hair back in an attempt to channel classic ancient Egyptian busts. I had also created a low-budget (but fun nonetheless) Nefertiti-style crown that made me feel like a true mystical relic.
Finally, I tested out the look using my necklace as a crown, which I think also looked pretty neat! I ended up wearing this look for the majority of the evening, as it was the most comfortable, but also perfectly in character :)

Here are two final shots of the look, including a vintage snake cuff that also worked perfectly with the look (gifted to me by one of my best friends- I love it!) and then me offering my now signature Halloween treat- spidery deviled eggs!
Hope you had a wonderful Halloween! What costumes did you don this year?

ReplyDeleteOh wow, the attention to details on the makeup is amazing, Jennifer! We stayed in because our little one justttttt recovered so we don't want him out in the cold. The weather was crap anyway on Halloween, it rained cats and dogs. :-(

Not recognizing or appreciating our own unique beauty is similar to the inference in the quote by Alice Walker that says: "I think it pisses God off if you walk by the color purple in a field somewhere and don't notice it", (The Color Purple). That may be putting it a bit bluntly, but sometimes we need a candid wake-up call. how many uses in a cbd hemp bath bomb
