Killer Arches Naturally, with EcoBrow

Hi, everyone! Two brow reviews in a row? A rarity, but a fun one! I described my brow saga in my last post, but in short: I plucked by brows ultra thin in the '90s and they have decided not to grow back. A sad, but common tale. I've been filling my brows in daily for over a decade and am generally fiercely loyal to my Anastasia Brow Powder Duo and Tinted Brow Gel. That said, I'm always eager to try new options, particularly when they offer something unique. Such is the case with EcoBrow Defining Wax*, a shining star of the natural beauty world.

EcoBrow is the brainchild of Marco Ochoa, celebrity "brow magician" and makeup artist. After years of pampering the stars, he set out to create a top-notch brow product that would help anyone achieve perfect arches. Thus, EcoBrow Defining Wax* was born. What makes it different? It's made of top-notch ingredients (including moisturizing Vitamin E and natural mineral pigments) and is free from parabens. On top of this, it promises to be easy to apply, long-wearing (thanks to oil-absorbing silica), and smudge-proof.  As a glamorous finishing touch, each shade is named after a classic Hollywood icon; there's Marilyn for blondes, Rita for redheads, Penelope for brunettes, and Liz for those with the darkest hair.

EcoBrow Defining Wax* comes in a cardboard box that's about twice the size of the product itself. Unnecessarily large, but it contains lots of helpful info, including a full ingredient listing. It also brings a smile to my face to see that this product is "tested on actresses, not animals" :)

The Defining Wax* comes in a little glass pot with a black screw-off lid. The pot is clear so that you can see the shade inside and it contains .121oz/3.4g of product (just slightly less than the .14oz in Anastasia's DipBrow Pomade).

The shade I chose was Marilyn, which EcoBrow describes as "a true fleshy taupe with a hint of gold [that] will not turn red or orange... provides soft, natural definition for fair-skinned brunettes and women with all shades of blonde hair" (from ecobrow.com). The inspirations for this shade include Gwen Stefani, Kate Hudson, Meryl Streep and, of course, Marilyn Monroe.

I would totally agree with the brand's description of Marilyn. It is a slightly golden taupe that pulls warm but does not have any traces of red or orange.

Here are swatches of Marilyn on the back of my hand, first lightly with a finger swipe and then more concentrated with an angled liner/brow brush:

Now let's see how EcoBrow Defining Wax* performs! Here are "Before" and "After" shots of my brows, first bare, then filled in with the Defining Wax in Marilyn. I used an angled liner/brow brush to apply the product (the Ecotools Angled Eyeliner Brush) and combed my brows with a spoolie both before and following application .

As you can see, Marilyn is a touch lighter and warmer than my natural brows, but still does a nice job at adding structure and filling in my ultra sparse areas.

And here are side-by-side "Before" and "After" photos to give you a sense of EcoBrow in the context of a completed makeup look:

So what are my thoughts of this little brow product? Let's peek at the Pros and Cons:

Pros:
  • Smooth, buildable formula allows the product to glide on subtly at first and layered for a bolder look. You really can't overdo it, at least with this shade!
  • Marilyn is a beautiful, natural blonde shade that should suit most blondes out there (except for those with the darkest blond hair or very cool undertones)
  • Marilyn doesn't pull orange or red on the skin (a tendency for far many brow products)
  • A little goes a very long way with this product, so it should last for ages!
  • Compact packaging will be handy for travel
  • Paraben- and Cruelty-free
Cons:
  • As it was my first time using a cream/wax/pomade style brow product, there was a bit of a learning curve with application. I'm not sure the Ecotools brush I used was the best, as it was fairly long and thin- I'm eager to try EcoBrow's version
  • It did partially wear off during my yoga class (though, for the record, it was the sweatiest yoga class ever)
  • At $28 CAD, this is more expensive than similar products on the market

Overall, I'm really loving this little brow wax! Although the formula isn't completely bullet-proof/yoga-proof, it is still quite long-wearing and easy to use. A little goes a long way and it's hard to over-do it- though building bolder brows is also possible! Marilyn does pull slightly light/warm on me, but I think it will work quite nicely when I want my brows to have a more natural look. I'm hoping to try the EcoBrow Eyebrow Defining Brush soon, which I'm sure will make application even more of a breeze. Three cheers for natural products that get the job done!

If I'm tempting you with EcoBrow Defining Wax, you can find it in-store or online at The Detox Market! You can check out their Canadian site, here+

  1. Oh wow it makes such a big difference to your look! I have pretty bushy brows so my biggest worry is plucking them away. I usually stick to powders but this sounds interesting to try.

  3. The color seems really goo for you. I currently prefer pencil over gel or wax though.

  5. As I said before, I need all the help I can get with my brows so this seems to tick all the boxes for me. I don't mind the price because it looks like a lot of product for the money. Are they sold in stores or online only?

  6. Ooh this definitely makes a big difference! I have big ol' brows but the payoff is that they grow wild and need a lot of taming to keep in check:)
