Blinc Discovery Collection: It's #LifeProof!

Hi, everyone! We've all heard the promises: makeup that's waterproof, sweat-proof, smudge-proof, and budge-proof. While there are definitely some products on the market that live up to these claims, there are certainly a fair share that disappoint. Anyone else have a "long-wearing" eyeliner melt into raccoon eyes by the end of the day? Anyone's waterproof mascara give up when the weather gets a little bit humid? Yeah, me too. So when Blinc got in touch regarding a selection of "Life Proof" products, I raised an eyebrow. That said, I'd known of Blinc as a brand for years, having heard nothing but good things about their cult favourite tubing mascara. So I put my skepticism aside and happily agreed to test things out!

I was sent the Get Amazing Eyes in a Blinc Discovery Collection**, which features four trial-sized products that promise to wear all-day long while providing additional healthy benefits to the brows, lashes, and eyes.

The kit includes:

Mascara Amplified, a tubing mascara that promises buildable length and volume while coating your lashes with colour that can only be removed with gentle pressure and water.

Eyeliner Pencil in Black, which offers a smooth, gliding formula that provides bold colour that won't fade all day. It also touts antioxidant ingredients to condition the eye area.

Eye Shadow Primer in Light Tone, designed to ensure shadows will remain crease- and fade-proof throughout the day while moisturizing the lids to reduce wrinkles and increase hydration.

Eyebrow Mousse in Light Brown, a tinted brow gel that adds colour, holds brows in place, fills in sparse areas, and moisturizes with a waterproof formula.

Each product is housed in a colourful tube with a full listing or directions and ingredients. Not the most streamlined or practical, but it is a pretty, unique visual!

Each of the products themselves are packaged in sleek, silver tubes with accents of the colour of the product inside. As miniatures go, these are decently-sized with full-sized, functional applicators.

The Eye Shadow Primer is a tinted cream formula with a non-oily consistency. The Light Tone shade is slightly yellow-toned and really brightens up my eye area. It quite reminds me of Urban Decay Primer Potion in Eden. I'd say that it would suit anyone with an NC/NW 15-25 skin tone. I find that this blends into the eye area nicely without any heaviness or tightness. And does it perform? Heck, yes! Eye shadow applies incredibly well over top and the primer really works to improve the vibrancy and wear of shadows. My shadows look identical after 8-10 hours of wear when I use this. I have just finished up a tube of my holy grail UD Primer Potion, and am happy to use this as a replacement!

After one swipe of the Eyeliner Pencil in Black, I thought "this is just a pretty average black eyeliner", but I've been loving this more and more as I've been using it. This eyeliner doesn't pack impressive pigment in one pass, but can easily be built up for more drama without any tugging or scratching of the lids. The most impressive thing about it? It seriously does not smudge or budge all day long. Even through a workout it stays put. Just as promised!

The Mascara Amplified in Black leaves me with mixed feelings. Even though my lashes are relatively long naturally, I gravitate towards more dramatic mascaras that provide both length and volume. It is in that area where this fails. Even with a couple layers, I find this mascara leaves my lashes looking a little wimpy. Where this excels? Its longevity! I can wear this mascara through a sweaty yoga class and there will not be a smear, smudge, or flake in sight. It really only comes off with some warm water and a gentle lash massage. Although I always worry that my lashes will fall off with the mascara tubes, my lashes always seem totally intact after removing this.

The Eyebrow Mousse in Light Brown provides a similar experience. It works completely fine as a brow gel, but I don't find it to provide as much hold or dimension as my beloved Anastasia Tinted Brow Gel. But, as with all of the products above, the wear time truly is top-notch. Despite how much sweat drips down my brow while exercising, my brows always remain completely intact. There is nothing more disappointing and embarrassing than disappearing brow colour and this gel leaves me with total confidence that I won't end up with creepy migrating brows when I leave the yoga studio.

Here are swatches of the Eyeshadow Primer, Eyeliner Pencil, and Eyebrow Mousse:

(L-R): Blinc Eyeshadow Primer in Light Tone, Eyeliner Pencil in Black, and Eyebrow Mousse in Light Brown

The overall verdict? While the mascara doesn't leave my lashes as plump as I'd like and I can't yet speak to any longer-term anti-aging effects, the wear-time of each of these products is truly exceptional. I seriously haven't had any instances where these products have budged. Yet, they remove painlessly without any reside. They truly are- dare I say- Life-Proof!!

For a final demonstration of these impressive formulas, here I am following a run. And not any run, but my first run in 2 years during which I sweat buckets, my eyes ran like crazy, and I saw my life flash before my eyes. You can see that the concealer I was wearing is patchy and uneven (revealing the tomato face underneath), but my brows, eyeliner, and lashes are completely intact. It was a post-run miracle!

Overall, I am so happy I received this kit. The Eyeshadow Primer has entered into daily rotation and the Eyeliner Pencil has become my go-to black liner. When I want to wear a bit of lashes and brows for a workout, I will always reach for the Mascara Amplified and the Eyebrow Mousse. There are few things better than true confidence that you won't finish yoga class looking like a Picasso! Namaste to that!

If truly Life-Proof formulas are important to you, I cannot recommend this kit more! You can find it on Blinc's website for $36 USD, here!!

What are your favourite waterproof, smudge-proof makeup items? Have you ever tried a tubing mascara? Do you wear makeup when you exercise?

Have a wonderful day! xo

Look of the Day: The Holy Grail

Hi, everyone! It feels like it's been absolutely ages since my last Look of the Day, so I'm pretty jazzed to be sharing one today! I acquired some lovely products at IMATS NYC last month and it's been a complete pleasure putting them to good use. The star of this show is the Violet Voss Holy Grail Pro Eye Shadow Palette (which I reviewed in my last post, here) with a very strong supporting role from Besame's Classic Colour Lipstick in Carmine

If you've seen the Holy Grail palette, you'll know it's rife with rich, warm shades of red, orange, bronze, gold, and berry. For today's look, I used several of these stunners to create eye makeup that is fiery, yet wearable. I started by applying Toffee and Cool Beans all over the lid for a warm, shimmery, mid-tone wash of colour. I then mixed a few of the berry-reddish shades- On Fleek, Glamping, and Cranberry Splash- and applied them to the crease as well as to the outer corners of the lids and lower lash lines. For some extra definition I applied Teddy Bear, a deeper matte plummy brown, in the crease and outer corners and then blended things out above the crease with Bestie, a lighter near-neutral matte brown. Finally, for some highlights, I popped a mix of Ploof and Crystal on the brow bones and inner corners of the eyes.

For added drama, I swept Chanel Le Crayon Kohl in Rouge Noir along my upper lash lines- it really is the perfect plummy black! And, after swiping on some mascara, I actually used false lashes!! I scored some ultra cheaply at Dollarama lately, so thought I'd play around a bit. First time I've worn them in a couple years! This time around, I sported Ardell Lashes #136. They were a perfect balance of drama and believability.

I didn't want my eyes to be the only pop of warm colour, so I swept a light dusting of MAC Matte Blush in Frankly Scarlet (yes, a wearable red blush!) and reached for perhaps the most perfect orange red out there, Besame Classic Colour Lipstick in Carmine.

The Breakdown:

Foundation: Chanel Les Beiges Healthy Glow Foundation No10 mixed with By Terry Light Expert Click Brush Illuminating Flawless Foundation Brush in Rosy Light

Contour: NYX Powder Blush in Taupe
Blush: MAC Matte Blush in Frankly Scarlet
Highlighter: Becca Shimmering Skin Perfector Pressed in Pearl and Champagne Pop

Brows: ecobrow Defining Wax in Sharon and Marilyn

Primer:
Blinc Eye Shadow Primer in Light Tone
Eye Shadow: (all from the Violet Voss Holy Grail Pro Eye Shadow Palette): Toffee and Cool Beans (mixed on the lids and along lower lash line), On Fleek, Glamping, and Cranberry Splash (blended and applied to the crease and outer corners of lower lash line), Teddy Bear (for extra definition in the crease and outer corners), Bestie (as a transition colour above the crease), Ploof and Crystal (mixed and used as a highlight on the brow bones and inner corners of the eye)

Eyeliner: Chanel Le Crayon Kohl in Rouge Noir
Mascara: BeneFit They're Real

Lipstick: Besame Classic Colour Lipstick in Carmine

And a few more shots of the look:

The Holy Grail palette is so ultra versatile, letting you create anything from ruby red editorial eyes to softer, neutral workday shadow, but I think the look I'm featuring today demonstrates the palette in perfect balance. It helps you paint sunset eyes effortlessly!

I'm happy that the Holy Grail was featured in my first Look of the Day in months, as I've truly been using this palette on a nearly-daily basis since I bought it. And again, let's not ignore the beauty of Besame Carmine- if there was ever an ideal 1930s matte orange red, this is it! I will be wearing it all Spring and Summer long!

How do you like wearing shades of warm red? What are your favourite warm-toned eye shadow palettes? Orange red lipsticks?

Thanks for dropping by! xo

Currently Obsessed: Violet Voss Holy Grail Pro Eye Shadow Palette

Hi, everyone! As much as my contrarian spirit hates to admit it, sometimes jumping on a beauty bandwagon pays off. Sometimes becoming a product lemming doesn't lead you off a cliff, but rather brings you something lovely. Case in point: the Violet Voss Holy Grail Pro Eye Shadow Palette. When I landed in NYC for IMATS last month, I knew of the brand and had heard rumblings about the Holy Grail on social media. But when my blogger buds and travel companions started raving about the palette as the must-have from the show, I still felt reserved- "oh, just another trendy palette with all those shades of red and caramel that all the kids are going crazy for", thought this old lady. Yet, I trust my friends' taste, so I tried to keep an open mind. Luckily I did, because when I saw the Holy Grail in person, I was sold. It really looked like, well... a holy grail of eye shadow palettes! Let's take a closer peek.

Violet Voss created the Holy Grail Pro Eye Shadow Palette as a limited-edition offering for summer. It features 20 full-sized(!) eye shadows (1.8g each; MAC shadows are 1.3g) in a variety of finishes- from matte, to satin, to full-on metallic. Bold pigmentation and smooth, blendable textures are promised and the shades really are summer-perfect. The range of coppers, bronzes, reds, berries, and softer neutrals really is stunning! The palette retails for $52 USD, though I got it at IMATS (and there has frequently been a discount code online) for $42.

The packaging of the palette is nothing to write home about. It's thin, lightweight cardboard with a finish that attracts every fingerprint and speck of dust. Think NARS, but without the rubber texture. It doesn't secure with any sort of snap, but rather with a weak-ish magnet, so you do have to handle and store with care so that it stays closed.

On the upside, it is super slim, which makes it great for storage and travel, and it does have a decently sized mirror. Also, I believe the simplistic packaging is one of the factors that keeps the cost of the palette down. Don't mind that at all!

Here's a closer shot of the Holy Grail shadows. A couple things to note: 1) this palette leans very warm, so if cool silvers and taupes are your thing, this palette might put you off and 2) the shade names are very... ummm... millennial? But if you can get over names like Hashtag, On Fleek, and Glamping, it is so worth checking out.

As for me, I'm a huge sucker for warm-toned eye shadows, and that is what drew me in. It really offers the full gamut of fiery hues! Given the beauty, uniqueness, and variety of the shades, I could totally look past the shade names. In fact, Awesomesauce and Cool Beans are totally in my own repertoire of cheesy phrases :)

Now for some swatches! All the shades below were swatched dry, with fingers, and without primer on my inner arm (MAC NC15 skin tone).

Here's a look at the shades in the top portion of the palette. As you can see, these first shades are all lighter to mid-tone (the palette gets darker and smokier close to the bottom) and truly offer a variety of finishes. I somehow forgot to swatch Toffee, which is actually one of my faves from the palette. Silly me! It's a beautiful metallic golden bronze shade.

And swatches from the bottom half of the palette! This is where the Holy Grail gets vibrant and smokey. And sooo pigmented!

There isn't a weak shade in the bunch, but which are my favourites? I'd have to go with:

Ploof- a beautiful pink ivory highlight
Bestie- a perfect neutral-warm mid-tone brown for the crease
Awesome Sauce- a rosy gold shimmer
Toffee- a warm golden bronze metallic
Cool Beans- a metallic blushed copper
So Jelly- a unique shimmery golden pink
Teddy Bear- a deep plummy matte brown
Glamping- a satin reddish orange bronze
Cranberry Splash- a metallic reddened berry

Here are a few looks I've created with the Holy Grail so far- I've seriously been using it about 5 times per week. These were all taken with my phone (not the most clear, not the best lighting in some cases), but hopefully you can get a sense of the pigmentation and versatility of the palette!

A warm golden-bronze look, using Toffee on the lids

A reddish look using On Fleek and Glamping

Using So Jelly to add some pink glow to the lids

Using Cool Beans, Awesome Sauce, and Transition for a softer, shimmery look

Aside from a few cringeworthy shade names, I cannot find a single fault with this palette! The variety of finishes makes the Holy Grail incredibly versatile, the pigmentation is top-notch, and the wear-time is impeccable! As a bonus, there is zero fallout with these shades and they are all smooth and wonderfully blendable. Plus, the brand is cruelty-free, which makes me so happy!

As I said above, I've been reaching for this palette nearly every day. It serves me well as a neutral palette for work days just as much as it is now my go-to for a bold, fiery look. So pleased to have jumped on this bandwagon! ;)

Have you been tempted by the Holy Grail Palette? Are these your kinds of shades? What do you think about the shade names?

Keep your eyes peeled for a full-breakdown Look of the Day featuring the Holy Grail palette coming up next!

Have a fabulous day :)

Those Unflattering, Yet Oh-So-Cool Lipstick Shades

Hi, everyone- happy weekend! A huge trend I've been noticing in the beauty world over the past couple years (in addition to the never-ending stream of contour and highlighting products), is the prevalence of "out there" lip colours. Shades of blue, green, purple, and grey used to be a rare novelty, but now they can be easily found just about everywhere (drugstore and high-end boutiques alike!). My opinion of this trend? I'm a bit torn! The vibrant makeup lover in me applauds it- why not rock a vivid turquoise lip?! Makeup is supposed to be fun! But on the other hand, many such lipsticks are just not, well... flattering. Is a beauty trend worth clinging to if it doesn' t make you feel beautiful? Let's explore.

In addition to noticing the crazy lipstick colour upswing in the beauty aisles, it was my own gradually accumulated collection of such shades that prompted this post. After an ultra fun makeup swap with my blogger pals in February, I found myself the proud owner of several blues and greens in addition to some wild options already in my possession. I decided to round them up and have a play!

Here are all of my out-there lipstick shades swatched on my inner arm (MAC NC15 skin tone), after which each is modeled below!

Makeup Revolution Lipstick in Felony
I generally find that, on its own, yellow lipstick is pretty useless. Felony included! Though I do like the sheerness of this and think it might layer over top of darker lipsticks quite well!

NYX Macaron Lippie in Orange Blossom
I'm a sucker for an orange lipstick, but what makes this one a bit "out there" is its whitened, pastel hue. Potentially hard to pull off, but I quite like it! I imagine it looking fab during the summer with a bit of a tan.

NYX Wicked Lippie in Risque
This one was perhaps the biggest surprise of the bunch- I actually think this rich, metallic greenish teal is quite flattering! I have yet to wear it out of the house, but I'm determined to.

NYX Macaron Lippie in Pistachio
Gosh, I love a bold turquoise, but in a lipstick? I really can't see a point, unless I was creating a specific, editorial (Smurf?) kind of look. Perhaps I'll take on that challenge!

Inglot Mama Mia Lipstick #291
I bought this lipstick the day I defended my PhD dissertation, as a way to celebrate being brave and free! As such, it will always hold a special place in my heart, but I have not worn it out of the house since.

OCC Lip Tar in Technopagan
This is definitely the coolest, most interesting crazy lip shade in my stash- a bold mix of purple, blue, and silver- it's quite the standout. I wore it to a David Bowie tribute concert earlier this year and felt like quite the Lady Stardust. Despite its beauty, though- I reach for it so very rarely.

NYX Liquid Suede Cream Lipstick in Stone Fox
I never thought I'd fall for an opaque grey-blue lipstick, but this one has won my heart. It's a shade just that just shouldn't work on any level, but somehow it can be pulled off! Definitely more apt to wear this one out in public than one of the more neon blue or green shades.

NYX Macaron Lippie in Chambord
I don't know if I've ever properly tried a black lipstick (except for my witch looks from Halloweens of old), but this one was also a pleasant surprise! Something about the semi-sheer, satiny finish makes Chambord look rich, elegant, and seriously wearable.

MAC Frost Lipstick in Viva Glam Rihanna 2
I think this was the first weirdo lipstick that made its way into my stash and perhaps kicked off the industry's goal of making such shades mainstream. The cool silvery brown tone really is unique and stunning, but I never, ever reach for it. Still not sure if I can pull it off.

H&M Beauty Cream Lipstick in Brunette Ambition
Another grey-toned brown, but much more subtle in this regard. Much more wearable than Rihanna 2 and the satin finish is very flattering!

OCC Lip Tar in Sebastian
I have a soft spot for this Lip Tar. My boyfriend tells me it makes me look like I've made out with a snowman, but I think this unique purple-grey-taupe hue is undoubtedly beautiful. I've gotten several compliments when wearing it, so I can't be the only one who sees its appeal!

Tom Ford Lips and Boys in Stavros
One that isn't swatched above (how could I have forgotten it?!) is Tom Ford Stavros. The fact that an ultra luxury brand could have such success with a silver-grey-purple lipstick really demonstrates how far this trend has reached. Even the upper crust are painting their pouts in out there shades! As with some of the shades above, though- I think everything about this is lovely- but I never reach for it!

OCC Lip Tar in Indrid
My final feature is the newest of the bunch, having joined my stash very recently at IMATS New York, and is perhaps my favourite. For me, OCC Indrid Lip Tar, a killer mix of purple, grey, and pink, is the ultimate balance between weird and wearable. It definitely makes a statement, yet doesn't seem to wash me out one bit. It's a true winner!!

Taken together, here are a few conclusions on this trend:

  • I'm happy that more alternative shades have made it to the mass market- I'm so in favour of letting your freak flag fly!
  • That said, I do not think I will be purchasing any more "out there" shades that I have any inkling will never be worn out of the house. I don't want a huge pile of blue lipsticks that never get used!
  • By the same token, I am promising myself that I will wear NYX Chambord (the best black lipstick out there?) and Risque (teal lips- who knew?) out of the house sometime this year. They are both incredibly stunning!
  • I am now determined to find more lip shades in the vein of OCC Indrid- those that are utterly unique, yet entirely flattering.

What are your thoughts on the "out there" lipstick shade trend? Would you buy a uniquely-hued lipstick just for the novelty if you knew you'd never wear it outside the house? What's the craziest lip shade you've ever worn? Your favourite of the ones I featured?

I'd love to hear your thoughts on this!

Thanks so much for stopping by! xo

Veracious Product Review: Nudestix Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencils

Hi, everyone! When it comes to trends in the beauty industry over the past few years, there are a couple standouts when it comes to lips: lipstick crayons and matte textures. In a sea of options, it really takes a lot to stand out, so I was understandably curious when Nudestix offered to send along two of their brand new Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencils** my way. I've been quite impressed with the Nudestix goodies I've tried to date (love the handy packaging and cheeky, modern aesthetic), but would these new matte pencils offer anything unique!?

Nudestix touts that their Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencils** offer smooth, creamy, non-drying matte colour that can be used as lipstick, lip liner, and/or blush. A triple threat! The formula promises to be long-wearing, comfortable, and impervious to feathering and fading. They also claim extreme pigmentation that is totally waterproof. A tall order, indeed!

The Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencils** come in black, reusable metal tins, as with all Nudestix products. They also feature a handy mirror in the lid and an insert with full instructions. I also can't help but love the little heart graphics on these too :)

While these pencils are not twist-up, each comes with a corresponding sharpener to use once the initial nib of product is worn down.

One of the taglines for the Intense Matte launch was "Are You Team Bold or Team Nude?", as the range offers a variety of both softer neutrals and punchier brights. The shades I received represent this battle quite well!

First we have Royal, a beautiful, balanced, classic saturated red. It's hailed as a Marilyn Monroe or a Taylor Swift red (depending on what decade your ideal icon comes from). Next we have Belle, a warm, peachy-brown mid-tone nude. It is neither too cool nor too warm, not too pale nor too muddy. I'd say it's likely to be universally flattering!

(L-R): Nudestix Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencils in Royal and Belle

Along with the Intense Matte Pencils**, I was also sent the Blur Pencil**. This clear, smoothing pencil was originally created to smooth out fine lines and pores on the complexion, but the Nudestix gals also tout it as a perfect partner to matte lipsticks, creating a smooth, priming canvas on the lips, especially when things are dry and chapped. The Intense Mattes really do apply ultra well over top!

I attempted to swatch the Blur Pencil for you, but it truly is invisible.

Now- most importantly- onto how these products work on the face!

Here I am wearing Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencil in Belle** on my cheeks as well as my lips. I've applied it directly from the pencil on my lips and used my trusty Real Techniques Stippling Brush to blend out the colour on my cheeks. While Nudestix promises that you don't need any brushes to use their products (and this is true; these do blend well with fingers), I can't help but reach for the Stippling Brush whenever using a cream blush product.

As you can see, Belle is a perfect, balanced nude with my complexion, defining my lips and adding a subtle peachy warmth to my cheeks.

Now here I am wearing Belle** on the lips and adding Royal** on the apples of my cheeks. I'm all for making red shades wearable, and was pleasantly surprised that Royal's saturated red hue did work on the cheeks! Yes, you do have to use an ultra light hand (I did go a touch overboard here), but it's totally doable.

Finally, here is Royal on the lips! It really is an incredibly beautiful, flattering, classic red! It joined the ranks of my favourites instantly. I mean, seriously- reds don't get much more gorgeous than this!

So it's clear that I think both shades are pretty, but how does this new formula perform? Here's a breakdown of the ups and downs of the Intense Matte Lip + Cheek Pencils:

Pros:
  • The pigmentation of these pencils is truly impressive! Full coverage in one swipe
  • The texture is quite smooth, so these apply easily without dragging or tugging
  • These feel incredibly light and slightly creamy on the lips- extremely comfortable compared with other matte lipstick formulas I've tried
  • These are about 90% matte, which make them a truer matte finish than many other recent "matte" releases that are much more satin-like, yet still allow for a flattering, non-drying effect
  • The wear time on these are great! Even after a full meal, there is very minimal fading at the center of the mouth
  • The pencil format allows for precise, foolproof application
  • These are vegan and cruelty-free (as with all Nudestix products)!

Cons:
  • You have to use a very light hand when using the bolder shades from this range as blush- the intense pigmentation means over-use is not forgiving!
  • These pencils have to be sharpened, which is slightly more high maintenance than a twist-up design
  • At $28 CAD, these definitely lean towards the higher-end side of things, but a little goes a long way and the formula truly is comparable with other high-end options of there

As you can tell, I'm way impressed by these! These matte pencils from Nudestix are definitely on par with other long-term faves, like the NARS Velvet Matte Lip Pencils, and the fact that the Nudestix can also double as a blush (thanks to the slightly softer texture) really is icing on the cake! The pigmentation is tops, the texture is smooth and comfortable, and the wear time is formidable. And although I'm clearly a Team Bold sort of gal (and am 100% smitten with Royal), I have to say that Belle might be the prettiest matte nude shade I've tried. Lighter matte neutrals can really tend to wash me out, but Belle keeps me looking fresh and alive. I absolutely cannot wait to try more shades from this range! Also, the Blur Pencil proved to be a very nice primer for the matte lip shades- I've been using it quite a bit!

I was lucky enough to attend a recent press event with the creator and faces behind Nudestix, Jenny, Taylor, and Ally Frankel, where we chatted about some amazing new products and social initiatives. Look out for more news on that soon!

Have you tried anything from Nudestix? Are you a Team Bold  or a Team Nude lipstick kind of gal/guy? Are you a sucker for lipstick/blush crayons like I am?

Have a wonderful day! xo
