Hi, everyone! Have you ever had a makeup look turn out quite differently from planned? Such is the case with today's look. I knew I'd be dipping into two of my new ColourPop goodies, specifically Super Shock Shadow in Empire and Ultra Matte lip colour in Bumble. I delved into the look aiming for a warm neutral effect. I expected Empire to be a warm jungle green and Bumble to be a mid-tone, go-with everything neutral lip. Instead, Empire proved to be a much cooler-toned emerald teal green and Bumble, at least on me, showed up as a deep, nearly vampy, neutral rose. So plans changed! Instead of a neutral, tropical makeup, the look morphed into more of a Cleopatra meets David Bowie meets parrot feather sort of feel. Not what I was originally shooting for, but I made it work!
I actually started the look by applying the lip colour, to get a feel of how bright and deep Bumble would be. I first lined lips with a fantastic neutral pencil, Annabelle Stay Sharp Long-wear Lipliner in Java, to create the shape, then applied Bumble as smoothly and evenly as possible.
I then went to work on the eyes. I first applied Empire on the lid, blending up to the crease and smudging the shade more heavily into the upper and lower lash lines. I then blended out the outer corners of the eye with a warm touch of Super Shock Shadow in Heat and added some neutral definition to the crease with Super Shock in On the Rocks.
Given the saturation of the eyes and lips, I opted for a softer cheek. I highlighted the skin with ColourPop Super Shock Highlighter in Highly Waisted and added a pinch of glow to the apples of my cheeks courtesy of the beautiful Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Incandescent Electra.
The Breakdown:
Foundation: Clinique Perfectly Real Foundation in Ivory
Concealer: Cle de Peau Concealer in Ivory
Powder: Rimmel Stay Matte Long-Wearing Pressed Powder in 011 Creamy Natural (on t-zone) and Hourglass Ambient Lighting Powder in Dim Light (lightly all over; and more heavily as a contour under cheek bones and along jaw line)
Blush: Hourglass Ambient Lighting Blush in Incandescent Electra
Highlighter: ColourPop Super Shock Highlighter in Highly Waisted
Brows: Anastasia Brow Powder Duo in Taupe and Tinted Brow Gel in Caramel
Primer: Urban Decay Primer Potion Original formula
Eye Shadows: ColourPop Super Shock Shadows in Empire (all over lid, concentrated near lash line and along the lower lash line), Heat (blended in the crease), and On the Rocks (to add definition to the crease) and The Body Shop Colour Crush Shadow in Oh, Honey (on brow bone and inner corners)
Eyeliner: MAC Pearlglide Intense Eyeliner in Black Line
Mascara: The HotShop Long Lash Mascara (from the Born Pretty Store)
Lipstick: ColourPop Ultra Matte Lip Colour in Bumble
Lipliner: Annabelle Stay-Sharp Long-wear Lip Liner in Java
And a few more shots of the look:
So while the look didn't turn out as planned, I nonetheless harnessed the opportunity to play with new colours and let my imagination wander. While Empire and Bumble are both wonderful shades, I think they aren't a perfect pair when worn together. Lesson learned, but no regrets!
When's the last time you had makeup plans take an unexpected turn? Are these shades that you would wear?
Have a wonderful day :)
What a wonderfully bright look this is! Very vibrant indeed!
