Veracious Product Review: Lush Salted Coconut Hand Scrub

Hi, everyone! Whenever Lush releases a new product (which they've been doing lots lately), my antennae go up. When they release a product unlike anything else in their lineup that smells of coconut? I'm there will bells on. After taking a whiff of Salted Coconut ($15.95 CAD) in-store, I knew it had to be mine.

Salted Coconut is designed to smooth the hands while leaving them lightly hydrated and softly scented. It is fully vegan and features a fab selection of natural, beneficial ingredients, including salt, lemon, coconut oil, and argan oil.

The instructions say to scoop out some product and smooth over wet hands for a gentler scrub or on dry hands for a deeper clean and exfoliation.

While I expected Salted Coconut to be rather thick and rich, I was slightly surprised to find that it is more so on the runny side of things. As you can see from the next two photos, it definitely moves in the tub when you tilt it and will run down your hands when applied. It's not completely watery, however; there are noticeable salt crystals as well as a lightly creamy feel that is no doubt attributed to the oils and butters inside.

In terms of the scent, it's more complex than the name suggests. Those expecting a pure coconut scent might be a bit disappointed, but I'm personally smitten. The fragrance is a beautiful blend of coconut and citrus (thanks to the lemon and orange) that is one part fruity and zingy, one part soft and sweet. Quite unique!

Once you start massaging Salted Coconut over your skin, it coats the hands nicely. The oils and butters become transparent and the salt crystals, more visible. The texture is abrasive, thanks to the salt, but does not feel sharp or scratchy.

After scrubbing for 30 seconds or so, I rinse Salted Coconut with warm water. The product rinses completely clean without any greasy residue and leaves hands looking smooth and feeling ultra soft. As you can see, my hand looks calm and happy, rather than red and irritated.

So what are my thoughts on this new offering from Lush? Here's a full breakdown of the pros and cons:

Pros:
  • The salty scrubby bits are effective at exfoliating without being harsh (i.e., it's not too wimpy or too abrasive)
  • Really leaves hands feeling soft and smooth
  • Lightly moisturizes the hands without any hint of greasiness (which means no inconvenient slippery fingers afterwards!)
  • Beautiful fruity scent that gently lingers without being overpowering
  • Vegan-friendly and cruelty-free
Cons:
  • If you expect this to smell quite coconutty, you might be disappointed (the citrus scent is a bit more noticeable)
  • If you want more intense hydration, you will have to use a hand cream afterwards

Overall, I am so happy with Salted Coconut! It is a pleasure to use, exfoliates thoroughly, and leaves hands smooth. I actually love that it doesn't have the overly greasy/slippery feel that some other scrubs leave behind. Instead, I can choose to leave my hands lightly hydrated or to use a richer hand cream over top. Beyond that, the smell is beautiful and lingers in the most subtle way. Only when hands are close to you get a hint of fragrance, which is always a nice surprise! I think this will be a much-loved product year-round is a perfect little extra to add to your routine for a quick, easy pamper.

Have you tried Salted Coconut? Are you tempted? Do you ever use a hand scrub? Any recent faves from Lush?

Hope your week is off to a fabulous start! :)

  1. I usually buy coconut products for the smell only! That's a bummer if it doesn't smell like coconuts. I think the consistency is too runny though. Sounds like a good product x

  8. This is on my Lush wishlist! I always get so excited when they come out with a new product -- I honestly just hate ordering online (and my closest Lush is in the Mall of America, which is 2.5 hours away! Ugh!)
My hands are starting to look like crocodile paws at the moment though. I feel like nothing that I do can get them soft and pretty like yours! I think I may have just found my answer :)

    Excellent review, as always!

  9. I've never used hand scrub before, my body scrub does a good job :) I like the sound of it and this is something I'd need this time of year, my hands feel rough even after applying so much hand cream.

  11. I saw this but couldn't bring myself to purchase it! I mean it's freaking pricey for a hand scrub but then again, I'm a cheapskate. :-P

  13. When I received this I was scared it'd smell too much like coconut as I'm not a fan. I love how this smells actually and is a great way to pamper my hands.
