Look of the Day: My Muse, Maleficent

Hi, everyone! Today's Look of the Day is all about colour, drama, and... evil ;) As Disney villains go, Maleficent has always been tops in my books. Her cold, cunning voice, that wicked laugh, and the awesomely frightening ability to transform into a dragon. Terrified me as a child and continues to mesmerize me today. I am so excited to see Angelina Jolie breathe life into her character on the big screen and, in the meantime, I've done my best to channel her myself!

I've seen some amazingly theatrical, dramatic Maleficent-inspired looks around the Blogosphere lately, and I wanted to emulate the same villainous feel, but in a more wearable way. No, this isn't first-day-on-the-job or meet-the-parents sort of makeup, but it is something you could wear for a night out without getting too many sideways glances. Though I really do wish I had the horns ;)

I tried to embody Maleficent's steely, frigid demeanour...

... but I can never hold a scowl for too long!

Onto what I used! I went for a flawless, fair base courtesy of Revlon ColourStay Foundation in Buff and Pressed Powder in Light. I created some defined, arched brows courtesy of Maybelline's Define-A-Brow in Dark Blonde and added light to the high points of my face with BeneFit Watt's Up highlighter. If you've seen the trailers for the new movie, you'll know Angelina's Maleficent is all about some serious cheekbones. I didn't go quite as bold as hers (would need some prosthetics for that!), but I made sure to create a wearable chisel. To achieve that, I used Kevin Aucoin's incredible Sculpting Powder in Medium. To re-create Maleficent's rich, glossy red lips, I painted my pout with NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Majella

For the eyes, I used MAC's tailor-made Maleficent Eye Shadow x4 quad, which mirrors Angelina's sculpted lids perfectly. I started by applying Goldmine (a true yellow gold) all over my lids and then added some definition with Concrete (a cool grey brown) on my crease and outer corners of the eye. For further drama, I added some of Ground Brown (a deep, warm brown) to the crease and underneath the lower lash line. I then added a touch more of Goldmine above the crease, as Angelina seems to in the movie. For liner, I created a winged shape with my favourite liquid liner, Revlon ColourStay Liquid Eye Pen in Blackest Black and topped it with Carbon eye shadow to set and darken the shade further. I finished the eyes with two thick coats of BeneFit They're Real! mascara.

Here's a close-up of the finished eye look:

And a full list of everything I used:

The Breakdown:

Primer: Laura Mercier Oil-Free Foundation Primer
Foundation: Revlon ColourStay Liquid Makeup (Combination/Oily Formula) in Buff
Concealer: Obsessive Compulsive Cosmetics Concealer in Y1
Powder: Revlon ColourStay Pressed Powder in Light

Contour: Kevin Aucoin Sculpting Powder in Medium
Blush: NARS Powder Blush in Deep Throat

Highlighter: BeneFit Watt's Up (on cheekbones and down bridge of nose)

Brows: Maybelline Define-A-Brow in Dark Blonde
Primer: Urban Decay Primer Potion Original Formula
Eye Shadows: (MAC Maleficent Eye Shadow Quad): Goldmine (all over the lid and above crease), Concrete (on outer corners and crease), Ground Brown (added definition in the crease, smudged underneath the lower lash line), Carbon (over top of eyeliner, winged out, and underneath lower lash line) and Shu  Uemura IR911 Eye Shadow

Eyeliner: Revlon ColourStay Liquid Eye Pen in Blackest Black
Mascara: BeneFit They're Real!

Lips: NARS Satin Lip Pencil in Majella

And a couple more shots of the look:

I had sooo much fun creating this look. I felt totally fierce and ready to frighten any innocent princesses in my path ;) But seriously, who doesn't want to rock chiseled cheeks, bold red lips, and winged liner once in a while?! I'm hoping to be able to see the movie next weekend, but, for now, this makeup gave me the perfect Maleficent fix.

Have you seen the Maleficent yet? Have you been inspired by Angelina's look in the film? Would you rock this villainous look?

Thanks for reading! xo
